Tool Calling

A capability that lets an AI model request the use of an external tool, function, API, or service as part of completing a task.

AI & Automation

In plain English

Tool calling lets an AI system do more than generate text. The model can decide that it needs outside information or an action, request a specific tool, receive the result, and then continue working with that new information.

Example

If you ask an AI assistant for the current weather, it could call a weather service, receive the latest forecast, and use that result to answer instead of relying only on information from its training data.
