In plain English
A webhook lets software react to events without repeatedly asking whether something changed. One service stores a callback URL and sends an HTTP request to that URL when a subscribed event happens.
Example
A payment platform can send a webhook to an online store when a payment succeeds so the store can automatically mark the order as paid.
