DNS

Domain Name System: a distributed naming system that connects domain names with records such as IP addresses and mail-server information.

In plain English

Software uses DNS to find information associated with a domain name. Some records provide network addresses, while others identify mail servers or hold other information. Answers can be cached, so a lookup may reuse a recent result.

Example

A startup configures DNS for app.example.com to point customers toward its load balancer. A lookup supplies the address information the browser needs to connect to that service.
