In plain English
ETL stands for extract, transform, load. Data is first collected from one or more sources, then cleaned or reshaped, and finally placed somewhere it can be analyzed or used by other systems.
Example
A retailer could extract sales records from several stores, standardize dates and product identifiers, and load the cleaned data into a central analytics database.
