In plain English
A prompt gives a model something to respond to. It can include a task, background information, examples, and a requested format. For a language model, this input helps shape the next response using the model's existing capabilities.
Example
A startup founder pastes customer interview notes into an AI assistant and asks it to summarize the three most common problems in a short bullet list. The notes and request form the prompt.
