In plain English

SQL lets people and applications work with data organized into tables. You can use it to filter records, combine information from tables, calculate totals, and add or update data. A query describes the result you want, and the database system works out how to produce it.

Example

A startup keeps orders in a relational database. A SQL query can retrieve only the paid orders from the last month and total their value for a sales report.
